What is an immigration evaluation?

An immigration evaluation is a psychological assessment used to help immigration courts determine whether an individual will be able to remain lawfully in the United States.

The evaluation is conducted by a licensed mental health professional and is tailored to specific immigration cases that the client is pursuing. The immigration evaluation itself includes in-depth interviews, assessments, and questionnaires.

Examples of immigration evaluations include:
  • U-Visa – an evaluation for individuals (and their immediate family) who have been victims of serious crimes at the hands of a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident and are willing to aid law enforcement in the prosecution of the illegal behavior.
  • T-Visa – an evaluation for individuals who are survivors of human trafficking as well as their family.
  • Asylum – an evaluation for individuals who fear persecution in their home country due to factors such as ethnicity, religion, nationality, political beliefs, or group participation.
  • Spousal Abuse (VAWA) – an evaluation for individuals (of any gender) who have experienced spousal abuse by a partner who is a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  • Extreme Hardship (Cancellation or Removal) – an evaluation of the difficulties an individual or their family would encounter if deportation were to take place.

What is the Evaluation Like?

In order to give our clients hope, RMCW strives to create a space of comfort therefore, we try to keep our evaluations lighthearted and informal. Your RMCW clinician will interview you about your family, your past, as well as any current medical and mental health issues. The data collected is then utilized to create a comprehensive report that covers hardship reasons, mental status examination results, scales, DSM-V diagnosis, implication, and recommendations.

We will also go over any information that your attorney feels is particularly pertinent to your case.
